Bernard Controls Nuclear Qualified Electric Actuators

The Nuclear Qualified series includes electric actuators for nuclear facilities, divided into NC, Nuc OC, and Nuc IC applications. Nuc IC variants are specified for operation inside containment, requiring functionality under ionizing radiation, seismic events, and LOCA (Loss of Coolant Accident) conditions.

Categories and Types

  • SN: Multi-turn actuators for safety-related service inside containment.
  • SQN: Quarter-turn actuators for EPR and non-EPR nuclear plants.
  • ST / OA / AS / BS: Multi-turn and quarter-turn actuators for outside containment or non-safety applications.
  • FQ: Spring-return fail-safe actuators, on-off or modulating Class III duty.

Standards and Certification

Design and qualification are based on RCC-E and IEEE standards. For SQN, RCC-E 2012 and IEEE Std 382-2006 apply, including tests for thermal aging, humidity, seismic stress, radiation, and LOCA profiles.

Operation and Selection

Selection criteria include:

  • Installation location: conventional island, auxiliary building, or reactor building
  • Requirement: K1 / K3 / NC
  • Valve torque or number of turns
  • Duty cycle: On-Off, Inching / Positioning, Modulating Class III
  • Available power supply, control signals, and remote feedback needs

SN actuators use mechanical position and torque measurement at the output shaft, self-locking gearing, and a handwheel that typically does not require clutch disengagement.

Operating Conditions

ST actuators: IP68 / NEMA 6, temperature range -20 to +70 °C (options: -40 to +70 °C or 0 to +100 °C), supply 1ph, 3ph, or DC up to 690 V, ISO 5210 flange.

Applications

Used on steam, cooling water, auxiliary nuclear systems, ventilation, dampers, and safety-related isolation valves. Media is determined by the valve; actuator selection is based on qualification envelope, torque, duty cycle, and safety requirements.

FAQ

When is Nuc IC required?
When the valve is inside containment and must remain operational after seismic and LOCA events.

What is checked during maintenance?
Sealing of connections, cable glands, grounding, position feedback, torque limiter, handwheel, operational tests, and qualification documentation.

Description

Solutions for the latest generation of reactors such as EPR, and for all other types of reactors: ACP1000, ACPR1000+, CPR1000, VVER…

QUALIFIED ACTUATORS FOR INSIDE CONTAINMENT (NUC IC)

The SN range houses multi-turn electric actuators qualified for inside containment safety-related service (Nuc IC). Nuc IC Actuators are designed for operation during 40 years in ionizing environment and remaining operational in case of seismic accidents and LOCA - Loss Of Coolant Accident (referred as "K1" type in the RCC-E standard). The SN Range is available for On-Off and Modulating duties.

QUALIFIED ACTUATORS FOR OUTSIDE CONTAINMENT (NUC OC)

BERNARD CONTROLS offers quarter-turn and multi-turn electric actuators complying with outside containment safety requirements (Nuc OC). These actuators are designed for operation in a normal environment for 30 years and during seismic accidents (referred as "K3" type in the RCC-E standard), and are available for On-Off and Modulating duties and with electromechanical or integrated controls.

Last but not least, Bernard Controls also offers quarter-turn and multi-turn electric actuation solutions for NC non safety requirements, for operation in a normal environment for 30 years.
