Bernard Controls Modulating Electric Actuator

The Modulating series is designed for continuous position control of valves, including quarter-turn, multi-turn, and linear types. These actuators are specified when the valve requires frequent incremental adjustments from a process controller, rather than simple open/close operation.

Duty Classification

Standard classification is Continuous Modulating – Class II, compliant with EN 15714-2 Class D. Selection is not based solely on torque or thrust. The following parameters must be evaluated:

  • Output position resolution
  • Dead band
  • Response time
  • Linearity
  • Motor thermal load during continuous position correction

Control Options and Variants

Available with electromechanical SWITCH or integrated INTELLI+ v2 control. INTELLI+ is used when local operation, position monitoring, diagnostics, alarms, and PLC/DCS connectivity are required.

Installation Environment

  • Enclosure protection: IP68
  • Corrosion protection: C3 to C5-M
  • Temperature range: -20 to +60 °C
  • Low temperature option: -40 °C
  • Explosion-proof variants available: SQXM / STXM

Applications

Suitable for control valves regulating flow, pressure, level, or temperature in steam, process water, fuel gases, chemical auxiliary circuits, and water treatment units. Media compatibility is determined by the valve; actuator selection is based on torque, duty cycle, position accuracy, response time, and environmental conditions.

FAQ

When is a Modulating actuator selected over standard SQ or ST?
When the process requires continuous position adjustment rather than periodic open/close cycles.

What is checked during maintenance?
Cable glands, IP sealing, mechanical coupling, limit setting, feedback signal, alarm history, dead band, and position stability under small setpoint changes.

PRODUCT BENEFITS

BERNARD CONTROLS’ PROVEN EXPERTISE FOR CONTINUOUS MODULATING

EN15714-2 Standard defines a duty classification for an electric actuator to operate the valve: On-Off, Inching/Positioning, Modulating and Continuous modulating. This duty classification defines basic design requirements. However, in order to define practically and precisely the appropriate solution corresponding to your own process requirements, you need to qualify each duty type with key criteria.

Modulating applications require specific expertise to define the most appropriate solution. Duty PERFORMANCE is the main criterion to fully address process requirements, but needs to be specified and completed with additional performance criteria, notably RESOLUTION.

For many years, BERNARD CONTROLS has been a leader in these applications. Our modulating classification is now well-know from our customers and has, in fact, inspired the European Norm EN15714-2. Therefore, BERNARD CONTROLS chooses to set key additional performance criteria – RESOLUTION / Dead band / Response Time / Linearity – to determine end-users’ solution.
