Rotary
Rotary electric actuators are used for automated operation of quarter-turn valves, including butterfly valves, ball valves, and plug valves, in industrial services such as water, air, low-pressure steam, HVAC, water treatment, and process fluid handling. Actuator selection should be based on valve operating torque under differential pressure, 90° travel time, supply voltage, duty cycle, enclosure protection, control signal, and integration with PLC, DCS, or local control panels.
This category includes Bernard Controls and Valpes actuators for on-off, positioning, and modulating duty. Bernard AQ units cover torque ranges from 50 to 10,000 Nm, with electromechanical SWITCH or smart LOGIC control options, IP68 enclosure, C4 corrosion category, operating temperature from -20 to +70 °C, and low-temperature execution down to -40 °C. They support Class A on-off duty, Class B inching/positioning duty, and Class III modulating duty, with Modbus RTU and Profibus DPV1 communication available on LOGIC versions.
Valpes ER PLUS actuators cover 10 to 100 Nm, with PA6 housing rated UL 94 V-0, IP66 protection, S4 50% duty rating, and operating temperature from -10 to +55 °C. Available control modes include on-off and 3-point modulating control, with adjustable limit switches, RS485 communication, mechanical 90° travel stops, and optional emergency backup, proportional control, 3-position configuration, Bluetooth, and Modbus RTU.
For hazardous or corrosive areas, ATEX and marine/heavy-duty executions are available, including Valpes DV/DVX models with aluminium housing, DNV-GL and ATEX approval, IP68 immersion rating to 10 m for 72 h, torque output from 25 to 300 Nm, ISO 5211 mounting interface, and configurable 90°, 180°, or 270° rotation.
During installation, verification should include torque margin, ISO 5211 flange compatibility, stem drive adaptation, limit switch setting, manual override function, anti-condensation heater, cable entries, condensation risk, and actual valve torque after seat ageing, deposit buildup, or extended service exposure.
