Gland Seal
Gland-packed steam stop valves are globe-type isolation valves used for shut-off and controlled flow restriction in industrial steam, condensate, hot water, thermal oil, air, process gas, and compatible liquid systems. Stem sealing is achieved by gland packing, typically graphite-based or other suitable packing material, mechanically compressed by the gland follower. Unlike bellow seal designs, stem tightness depends on correct packing adjustment, thermal cycling, packing wear, and the applied maintenance regime.
This category includes ARI STOBU, Comeval UNIFLOW, Corex V30.1, ICP forged globe valves, and Valvosider designs to DIN or ASME standards, with straight pattern, angle pattern, and Y-pattern bodies. Available standardization includes DIN and ANSI/ASME, with pressure ratings from PN 10 to PN 420 and ASME Class 150 to 4500, depending on construction type and body material.
Valve selection is based on DN/NPS, PN or ASME Class, operating temperature, allowable pressure drop, Kv/Cv requirement, end connection type, and material compatibility with the process medium. Available end connections include flanged, BSP, NPT, socket weld, butt weld, and ISO types. Body materials include cast iron, carbon steel, low-temperature carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, duplex, and nickel alloys.
In steam and high-temperature service, thermal expansion, installation orientation, flow direction, and access for packing retightening or replacement should be checked during design and maintenance planning. Y-pattern stop valves are typically selected where lower hydraulic resistance is required compared with a conventional globe body, while angle pattern valves are used where the valve is installed as part of a change in piping direction.
