VALPES Electric Actuator with Modbus-RTU

The Modbus-RTU option is available for VALPES electric actuators to enable integration with PLC, SCADA, or automation systems via RS485 serial communication. Applicable to actuators rated from 10 to 2400 Nm, this interface supports remote operation, status monitoring, and basic diagnostics through register access.

Compatible Series

  • ER PLUS
  • VR / VS
  • VRX / VSX ATEX
  • LT low temperature
  • DV / DVX DNV-GL & ATEX
  • VT PLUS
  • MT multiturn
  • All BBPR / GS6 and POSI-BBPR / GPS variants

Network Architecture

Communication uses a master-slave protocol. Each RS485 segment supports one master and up to 31 slave actuators over distances up to 1200 m. With repeaters, up to 247 actuators can be addressed. Shielded twisted pair cabling per EIA-485 is required, with proper grounding and 120 Ω termination at the last node.

Communication Parameters

  • Protocol: Modbus RTU, 16 bit CRC
  • Baud rate: 9600
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: none
  • Stop bit: 1
  • Addresses: 1–247, 0 for broadcast

Functions and Registers

Supported Modbus functions: 0x03 read holding registers, 0x06 write single register, 0x10 write multiple registers, 0x17 read/write multiple registers. Depending on the actuator board, available registers include operation cycles, run time, position feedback, temperature, over-torque/overheat faults, BBPR status, and battery charge level.

Applications

Used in installations with multiple electric actuators: water treatment, HVAC, auxiliary industrial networks, marine systems, tanks, and isolation lines. Media compatibility is determined by the valve; Modbus-RTU is for command, feedback, and diagnostics integration.

FAQ

When is Modbus preferred over conventional contacts?
For centralized monitoring of multiple valves, reduced signal wiring, and access to diagnostic data.

What is checked during maintenance?
Slave addressing, 120 Ω termination, shield grounding, CRC errors, RS485 A/B polarity, IP sealing, and fault registers.

A SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE TECHNICAL ARCHITECTURE

The “master-slave” architecture of Modbus-RTU offers great operating flexibility. Each RS485 line makes it possible to associate a master device and 31 slaves over a maximum distance of 1200 meters. Using repeaters, Modbus-RTU allows the connection of 247 actuators to a PLC.

AN EASY INTEGRATION WITH EXISTING INSTALLATIONS

The deployment of a Modbus-RTU actuator network requires very little infrastructure, that’s only the addition of a serial link cable compatible with the EIA-485 standard.

AN ACCESS TO ANY TYPE OF NETWORK VIA GATEWAYS

Valpes Modbus-RTU actuators can be integrated into any existing PLC network, using different communication protocols. The gateways allow a conversion to:.

Modbus TCP/IPProfibus DPProfinet
Ethernet/IPProfibus PACANopen

A HIGH RELIABILITY

Modbus incorporates an error verification code named " cyclic redundancy check " or CRC, relating to all the frames sent. In the event of a weak electrical signal, an error may occur; in which case the message will be reissued until it is correctly understood.
