Bellino BPD Probe Desuperheater – Steam Desuperheater

The Bellino BPD is a probe-type desuperheater designed for cooling superheated steam through the injection of atomized water. It is utilized in applications requiring small to medium spray water flows without simultaneous pressure reduction in the same equipment. Water flow is controlled by a separate regulating valve.

Operating Principle

The BPD is installed within the steam line and features one or two SP atomizing nozzles. These nozzles are connected to a common spray water pipe. The probe's position is selected to ensure the spray zone is near the steam pipe's axis, with the nozzle orientation mechanically secured in the flow direction.

SP Nozzle and Atomization

The SP nozzle is a mechanical variable orifice nozzle. Water enters the internal chamber, gains rotational motion, and exits at high speed from the nozzle edge. Fine droplet dispersion reduces evaporation time and minimizes the risk of wet steam downstream.

Materials and Installation

Materials are selected based on design pressure and temperature. The catalog lists, for example, A335 P22, A335 P12, A335 P91, A182 F91, 10CrMo910, and 13CrMo-44 for steam and/or water sides. A liner may be added to improve turndown or protect the steam pipe from impingement.

When is BPD chosen over a ring desuperheater?
When the spray water flow is small or medium. For large flows, the BRD ring type is typically used.
