GESTRA SMK – Hygienic Steam Trap for SIP/CIP
The GESTRA SMK is a thermostatic membrane steam trap from the STERIline series, designed for condensate removal and steam venting in sterile or aseptic processes. It is utilized in SIP, CIP, pharmaceutical lines, biotechnology, food/beverage, and clean steam facilities where minimal dead volume and condensate-free drainage are required.
Operation
The membrane regulator responds to temperature and phase changes. During cold start-up, it remains open for air and condensate. It closes as steam approaches, with an opening temperature approximately 5 K below boiling point. The rolling ball/self-centering cone design aids in tight seating even with small particles.
Variants and Technical Limits
- SMK 22 / SMK 22-51: PN10, ΔPMX 6 bar.
- SMK 22-81 / SMK 22-82: PN10, functional unit for easy replacement.
- PMA: 10 barg.
- TMA: 150 °C with EPDM, 185 °C with PTFE.
- Materials in contact with media: stainless steel.
- Capsule/membrane: Hastelloy / 1.4571.
- Surface roughness of wetted parts: Ra ≤ 0.8 μm, optionally ≤ 0.6 μm or ≤ 0.4 μm for SMK 22.
Connections and Standards
Available for clamp DIN 32676 and piping DIN 11866, DIN 11850, EN ISO 1127, and ASME-BPE. SMK 22 / 22-51 versions cover butt-weld and clamp connections, while SMK 22-81 / 22-82 are intended for clamp assembly with removable functional unit.
Application Selection
Selection is based on steam pressure, back pressure, condensate flow, DN, connection type, installation point, and cleaning/sterilization requirements. The membrane should not be exposed to superheated steam above 5 °C.
Maintenance
Maintenance involves depressurizing and cooling the line. In new installations, inspection and cleaning of the capsule are required after start-up due to potential contaminants from welding or pipe flushing.
