Bernard Controls FSE Electric Fail-Safe Actuator

The FSE series is an electric actuator with integrated hydraulic circuit and mechanical spring return, designed for process safety valves. It is specified where the valve must move to a defined safe position in the event of power loss, e.g. ESD valves, high-pressure ball valves, and triple-offset butterfly valves.

Fail-Safe Operation

On loss of power or Emergency Shutdown command, the spring drives the valve to its safety position without external energy. Configurations include:

  • fail-close
  • fail-open
  • fail-freeze / stop (depending on control setup)

When power is restored, the actuator resumes normal operation without manual spring reset.

Technical Specifications

  • Torque for rotary applications: up to 600,000 Nm (PDF) or 700,000 Nm (product page); selection must be confirmed per project.
  • Linear force: 1.2 to 8,000 kN.
  • Operating classes per EN 15714-2: Class A, Class B, Class III.
  • Enclosure: IP67, dual sealing for wiring/control compartments.
  • Corrosion protection: C5-M per ISO 12944.
  • Ambient temperature: -20 to +60 °C, options for +70 °C or -50 °C.
  • ATEX / IECEx: Ex d IIB T5 as standard flameproof version.

Control and Diagnostics

FSE includes integrated control, local operation, LCD for position/pressure/alarm, PST – Partial Stroke Test, ESD priority input, 7 relay outputs, and options for 4–20 mA, Modbus, Profibus, Foundation Fieldbus, or HART. SIL 2 / SIL 3 capability per IEC 61508 / IEC 61511 available.

Applications

Suitable for oil & gas units, chemical processes, fuel gas, storage tanks, pipelines, ESD isolation, and valves where fail-safe open/close is a process safety requirement.
