The 50M-2 Pressure Relief Valve is designed specifically for back pressure sustaining or pressure relief in constant pressure pumping systems. Available in a wide range of sizes and built to MIL Spec, MIL-F-20042, Class 150 or 250, with flanged end connections.
Cla-Val 50M-2 Pressure Relief Valve
The Cla-Val 50M-2 is a pilot-operated pressure relief valve designed for marine piping systems. It is used for back pressure sustaining or pressure relief functions in constant pressure pumping systems. This version features flanged ends and is manufactured in accordance with MIL-F-20042 Class 150 or Class 250 standards.
Operational Role
The 50M-2 opens when line pressure exceeds the pilot setpoint, diverting flow to bypass, return, or a designated discharge location. In back pressure sustaining mode, it maintains minimum upstream pressure to prevent system pressure collapse during flow fluctuations.
Technical Selection Data
- Type: Pressure Relief Valve
- Function: pressure relief / back pressure sustaining
- Service: constant pressure pumping systems
- Connection: flanged
- Specification: MIL-F-20042 Class 150 or 250
- Cla-Val marine category: pressure relief / remote sensed relief valves
Difference from Conventional Relief Valves
The 50M-2 is not a simple spring-loaded relief valve. The main valve is controlled by a pilot circuit, enabling proportional opening relative to pressure and required relief flow. This is critical in constant pressure pump sets, where abrupt flow changes can cause pressure surges.
Typical Applications
- Constant pressure pumping systems
- Fuel or service piping as specified by project requirements
- Pump bypass lines
- Overpressure protection for process lines
- Marine networks with MIL-F-20042 flanges
Maintenance
Inspection should include pilot lines, filters, main valve diaphragm, seat, set pressure, and tightness in the closed position. In fuel or water with solids, small control passages may clog and alter opening pressure.
