Cla-Val 90M Pressure Reducing Valve for Marine Applications

The Cla-Val 90M is an automatic pressure reducing valve designed for shipboard piping systems where downstream pressure must remain controlled despite fluctuations in upstream pressure or flow demand. Typical applications include sanitary flushing systems and evaporator cooling systems. The valve is suitable for both freshwater and seawater service, depending on material selection.

Standards and Connections

  • Type: Automatic Pressure Reducing Valve
  • Connection: flanged
  • Flange standards: MIL-F20042 Class 150 or MIL-F20042 Class 250
  • Available sizes (marine reference): 1 1/4", 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2", 3", 3 1/2", 4"

Operation

The valve modulates via hydraulic pilot control to maintain a preset downstream pressure. If downstream pressure rises, the valve restricts flow. If demand increases and downstream pressure drops, the valve opens to restore setpoint. The design does not provide relief valve functionality; separate overpressure protection is required where necessary.

Selection Criteria

  • Upstream pressure / downstream set pressure
  • Minimum and maximum flow rates
  • Available differential pressure
  • Flange class MIL-F20042
  • Process media: freshwater, seawater, or auxiliary circuits
  • Access to pilot lines and strainers

Maintenance

Routine inspection should include cleaning of the pilot strainer, checking diaphragm and seat condition, internal passageways, and verifying downstream pressure at both low and high flow. For seawater service, inspect for salt deposits and blockages in small control passages.
