Cast Flow Foot Valve with Check Valve Function

The Cast Flow foot valve integrates a check valve with a suction strainer basket. It is installed at the pump suction line inlet to prevent ingress of large solids and to maintain pump priming after shutdown. The assembly is not intended as a process filter; the basket retains coarse debris, while fine suspended solids require separate filtration stages.

Use in Pumping Systems

Typical applications include suction from tanks, reservoirs, channels, lakes, or open water basins. The valve is suitable for water and compatible non-aggressive liquids. For media with high solids content or fibrous material, selection of basket perforation and check valve type is critical to minimize clogging risk.

Variants and Connections

  • Connections: Flanged or wafer, depending on valve configuration.
  • Pressure ratings: PN10 / PN16 as specified in product documentation.
  • Basket materials: Galvanized steel, AISI 304, or AISI 316 stainless steel.
  • Fasteners: A2 bolts included only for certain flanged assemblies; wafer versions do not include bolts or auxiliary flanges.

Check Valve Compatibility

The foot valve can be supplied with various check valve types, including centred check disc, dual plate, or ball check valves. Available sizes and pressure classes depend on the selected valve type and connection style.

Selection Considerations

Selection is not based solely on pipe DN. Engineers must verify suction flow rate, available NPSH, allowable pressure drop, submergence depth, clogging risk, and accessibility for maintenance. The basket’s nominal opening exceeds pipe diameter to avoid being the primary flow restriction when clean.

Standards / Certifications

No specific standard applies to the suction basket. Testing and certification are determined by the selected check valve. Cast Flow references ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and PED Annex III Module H.

FAQ

Is it suitable for wastewater? Only if an appropriate check valve type and basket are selected, considering clogging risk.
Is maintenance required? Periodic basket cleaning is necessary, especially in open water sources with leaves, sand, or organic solids.

SPECIAL ALLOYS

Over the years the most frequent used materials on the desalination market have been the so called “Superstainless” or “ superaustenitic”, which anti corrosive properties are superior to austenitic steels.

Due to the price increment on the prime materials and as an alternative more competitive for these materials, Duplex and Superduplex of second generation have been introduced in the market of desalination.

The family of Duplex and Super duplex Stainless steels offer a significant advantage over Standard austinic steels.

The 50/50 ferrite /austenite structure gives improved corrosion and abrasion resistance together with improved tensile and yield properties.

Duplex Composition range is obtained by a complex structure, and therefore requires a much greater degree of technology, melting and process control compared with austenitic stainless steel constructions.

CASTFLOW VALVES S.L. has been experiencing the production of check valves in Duplex stainless steel for the last years, increasing our knowledge on the complex casting technology.

PITTING RESISTANCE EQUIVALENT NUMBER (PREN)

The resistance to pitting of an alloy is of vital importance , particularly so in handling seawater. Assessment of resistance to pitting is often made by use of a pitting resistance equivalent number which, when this takes account of Cr Mo and N is referred to as a PREn Number.

Calculation is made on the basis of the following.
