KITO G 18.1 N – Inline Detonation Flame Arrester for Short-Term Burn Resistance

The KITO® FDN-Det4-IIA-…-1.2 / …-1.2-T is an inline detonation flame arrester designed for the protection of vessels, tanks, and process equipment against stable detonations in piping systems conveying flammable gases or vapors. Certified as a detonation flame arrester type 4, it is suitable for use in hazardous areas where explosion protection is required.

Application Limits

  • Explosion groups: IIA1 to IIA
  • MESG: > 0.9 mm
  • Max. operating pressure: 1.2 bar abs.
  • Max. operating temperature: 60 °C
  • With PT100 sensor, certified for short-term burn from one side

Unidirectional operation refers to the explosion protection direction, not the normal flow direction. Flow is possible in both directions, but installation must observe the protected side marking and likely explosion propagation direction.

Dimensions and Connections

Available in DN 25 to DN 100. DN 25–40: PN 40; DN 50–100: PN 16. Standard flange: EN 1092-1 Form B1; optional: ASME B16.5 Class 150 RF.

Materials and Options

  • Body/Cover: cast steel 1.0619
  • Optional: cast stainless steel 1.4408
  • O-ring: Viton or PTFE
  • KITO element: fully replaceable
  • KITO housing/mesh: stainless 1.4571 / 1.4571
  • Sensor: PT100, 3/8" connection, material 1.4571

Selection Criteria

Selection must consider DN, explosion group, pressure, temperature, allowable pressure drop, and thermal monitoring requirements. Flow curves are based on air at 1.29 kg/m³ at 273 K; correction for other gases is required based on density.

Typical Applications

  • Solvent tank vent lines
  • Vapor recovery piping
  • Chemical plants handling IIA group gases
  • Equipment protection where detonation and local short-term burning are possible

FAQ

Does it cover IIB or IIC?
No. Certification is up to IIA only.

Is it a check valve?
No. It does not restrict flow direction; it restricts explosion propagation direction.

What certification is provided?
Type certificate per EN ISO 16852 and CE marking according to ATEX 2014/34/EU.

Description

KITO® FDN-Det4-IIA-…-1.2

KITO® FDN-Det4-IIA-…-1.2-T

  • For installation into pipes to protect containers and components against stable detonation of flammable liquids and gases.
  • Tested and approved as detonation flame arrester type 4.
  • Approved for all substances of explosion groups IIA1 to IIA with a maximum experimental safe gap (MESG) > 0.9 mm.
  • Working unidirectional in pipes, whereby an operating pressure of 1.2 bar abs. and an maximum operating temperature of 60 °C must not be exceeded.
  • Provided with one temperature sensor (PT 100) the armature is certified against short time burning from one side.
  • The installation is not dependent on the position and both directions of flow are possible.
  • During installation, please observe the direction of detonation and the indication „protected side“.
