MACOGA MAC-O – Unrestrained Clamped Rubber Expansion Joint

The MAC-O is an elastomeric expansion joint designed for low-pressure piping systems, featuring a single unrestrained clamped rubber configuration. It is primarily used in loading/unloading operations and lines conveying media with suspended solids, with a maximum operating pressure of 0.30 barg. Units can be manufactured in standard or custom diameters and installed on straight runs, bends, or reducers.

Operational Behavior

The MAC-O absorbs axial, lateral, and angular movements within a piping section. As an unrestrained joint, it does not contain axial pressure thrust; this force is transferred to the system’s anchors and guides. Verification of main and directional anchors is required prior to commissioning.

Construction

  • Elastomeric body with one or more convolutions or plain sleeve geometry.
  • Clamped connection; clamps available on request.
  • Available elastomers: EPDM, EPDM HT, NBR, white NBR, Hypalon/CSM, SBR, Viton/FKM, Chloroprene.
  • Punched/connected or custom-built to suit line arrangement.

Compatible Media

Material selection is based on process media and temperature:

  • EPDM: water, hot water, seawater, salt solutions, oil-free air.
  • NBR: oils, fuels, hydrocarbons, butane/propane; not suitable for steam or hot water.
  • SBR / Natural Rubber: slurries, wastewater, liquids with suspended solids.
  • FKM: hydrocarbons, chlorinated chemicals, oils, solvents at elevated temperatures.

Installation and Inspection

Not intended for correcting misalignment. Installation length, allowable movements, and flow direction (if internal liner is present) must follow MACOGA drawings. Sealing surfaces do not require additional gaskets when the elastomeric end seals directly to the connection.

FAQ

When to select MAC-O over MAC-FT?
MAC-O is used when the piping system has adequate anchoring and pressure thrust containment via tie rods is not required.

Is it suitable for vacuum service?
For vacuum applications, an internal vacuum ring is required as per MACOGA technical guidelines for rubber joints.

Description

These expansion joints can be fabricated with single and multiple arches, or in a simple sleeve configuration, each for use with the clamped connection (clamps can be supplied, upon request).

The MAC-O is recommended for use in services with a maximum pressure of 0,30 barg, and is wellsuited for loading and unloading processes, with outstanding performance when used for media containing solids. It is fabricated in standard and custom diameters for use with piping, elbows, or reducers.

Regardless of accessories, such as liners and covers, it can absorb all of the movements in any one length of piping.
