MACOGA – Technical profile of a metal, rubber and fabric expansion joint manufacturer
MACOGA S.A. is a Spanish manufacturer of expansion joints for piping systems, ducts, flue gas systems, pressure equipment and industrial process installations. Its range includes metal, rubber and fabric expansion joints for thermal expansion, vibration, axial movement, lateral movement, angular rotation and installation misalignment.
The main product areas include:
- metal expansion joints,
- rubber expansion joints,
- fabric expansion joints,
- universal, tied, hinged and gimbal designs,
- pressure-balanced expansion joints,
- externally pressurised expansion joints,
- rectangular and special-shape joints,
- high-temperature duct expansion joints.
Metal expansion joints use metallic bellows as the flexible element. They are selected for pressurised piping, steam systems, process lines, pump connections, heat exchangers and high-temperature services. Design must consider EJMA, ASME, EN 14917 or project-specific code requirements.
Rubber expansion joints are used mainly for water, HVAC, pumps, low to medium temperature systems and vibration isolation. They can absorb axial, lateral and angular movements and reduce noise transmission. Tie rods, hinges or gimbal arrangements must be selected when pressure thrust needs to be restrained.
Fabric expansion joints are used in ducts, flue gas systems, exhaust lines, scrubbers, baghouses, ESP systems and high-temperature gas handling. They must be selected according to gas composition, temperature, pressure, dew point, acid condensation risk, insulation requirements and movement data.
An expansion joint must not be selected only by DN. Required engineering data include:
- pressure and temperature,
- medium,
- axial, lateral and angular movement,
- number of cycles and fatigue life,
- spring rate,
- pressure thrust,
- pipe anchors and guides,
- liner requirement,
- cover or insulation,
- material of bellows, flange, rubber or fabric layers,
- testing and certification.
For piping engineers and mechanical engineers, a MACOGA expansion joint is part of the pipe stress design, not a simple flexible connector.
