Cla-Val 240M-4 Void Filling Valve

The Cla-Val 240M-4 is a hydraulically actuated valve designed for wing tank void filling in marine applications. While part of the 240M ballast valve series, its operational role is distinct from the 240M-3: the 240M-4 is specifically intended for controlled filling of void spaces/wing tank voids, not for general ballast water management.

Technical Data

  • Type: Void Filling Valve
  • Manufacturer: Cla-Val
  • Model: 240M-4
  • Application: Wing Tank Void Filling
  • Available Sizes: 8" and 10"
  • Connection: Flanged, non-standard dimensions
  • Body Material (as listed): Naval Bronze
  • Compatible Controls: CM10M-CP3-4 and CM10M-AC3-4 for 4-way hydraulic actuation

Operational Role

Used where controlled filling of void spaces is required on vessels, actuated via hydraulic circuits. Selection depends on tank arrangement, installation location, fill path, and remote actuation requirements.

Unlike basic on/off pipeline valves, the 240M-4 is integrated into a process control system. Selection must consider the hydraulic schematic, pilot lines, and 4-way actuator logic.

Selection Considerations

  • Size: 8" or 10"
  • Exact non-standard flange dimensions
  • Installation location within wing tank/void space
  • Available hydraulic actuation pressure
  • Required fill time and allowable flow rate
  • Material compatibility with seawater
  • Access for inspection and functional testing

Maintenance

Inspection should include actuator travel, seat leakage, elastomer condition, corrosion on wetted parts, and hydraulic line cleanliness. For continuous seawater exposure, monitor for fouling, salt deposits, and moving part obstruction.

Description

Cla-Val 240M Series Ballast Valves control the balance and buoyancy of surface marine vessels. Depending on sea conditions and individual ship requirements, Cla-Val hydraulically operated ballast valves open or close to fill or drain compartments to attain the desired level of buoyancy and to keep the ship in proper balance. They are also used to help facilitate the launching of small watercraft from a larger vessel.

Hull-mounted and submerged, these rugged valves are constructed of top-quality Naval Bronze materials for long life and minimal maintenance.

Whether in the ballast system of an enormous aircraft carrier with thousands of crew members or smaller surface vessels, Cla-Val ballast valves perform with reliability and precision, backed by more than 65 years of experience in the military marine industry.

Cla-Val Model 240M-4 is used in the seawater ballast systems of naval aircraft carriers. Constructed of highly durable Naval Bronze, this valve requires little maintenance and will withstand harsh conditions wear-and-tear that continuous exposure to seawater can cause. Available in 8” and 10” sizes.
