Void Filling Valves
Marine void-filling valves are used in seawater ballast systems and wing tank void-filling service, where controlled flooding of compartments is required to adjust buoyancy, trim, list, and the vessel’s operating condition. Their function should be evaluated against tank geometry, available hydraulic actuation pressure, hull installation position, and the requirement for remote operation from a control panel or selector valve.
This category includes the Cla-Val 240M-4, a void-filling valve intended for seawater ballast duty. The 240M series is applied for opening or shutting off flow during compartment filling or draining in order to achieve the required vessel balance and displacement condition. The 240M-4 is referenced for wing tank void-filling applications and is supplied in 8 in. and 10 in. sizes, with flanged connections in non-standard dimensions.
The valve construction is associated with hull-mounted or submerged installations, where continuous exposure to seawater requires corrosion-resistant materials such as Naval Bronze, together with resilient sealing elements suitable for wet, saline service. Selection should take into account required filling flow rate, differential pressure across the valve, shutoff tightness, pipework loads, and access for inspection and maintenance. Where relevant, the specification should also confirm flange drilling, pressure rating, actuator control pressure, and compatibility with the vessel’s ballast control arrangement.
During maintenance, inspection typically covers the seat, disc or piston, sealing components, hydraulic control lines, and deposits from salts or suspended solids. In void-filling service, the valve should not be treated as a simple isolation device, but as a functional element of the ballast control and buoyancy management system, with leakage condition and response to command forming part of the operating assessment.
