GESTRA VKP – Portable Steam Trap Testing
The GESTRA TRAPtest VKP 42 / VKP 42 Ex is used for periodic testing of steam traps, regardless of manufacturer, to diagnose live steam loss and condensate accumulation. Measurement is based on ultrasonic vibrations in the trap body and simultaneous surface temperature measurement.
Operating Principle
The sensor is pressed at a designated point on the trap body. The measuring transducer converts the ultrasonic signal into digital data, while the Com box transmits it via Bluetooth to the data collector. Evaluation is performed with noise limits per trap type and by comparing operating temperature-pressure to detect waterlogging.
Technical Specifications
- Test duration: 10–20 s
- Data collector: 5" display, IP68, Bluetooth up to 8 m
- Sensor: surface temperature measurement -10 to +350°C
- Com box: Li-ion battery, approx. 8 h operation
- Software: TRAPtest VKP local or portal, with curve storage, reports, steam and CO₂ loss calculation
- No actuator or process line connection required; measurement is external on the trap body.
VKP 42 Ex Version
The VKP 42 Ex version is intended for gas explosion risk areas and has ATEX / IECEx approvals. It is permitted for use in zones 1 and 2, with approved components VKPN 42 Ex, VKPC 40plus Ex, and VKPS 40Ex. The standard VKP 42 version is not used in explosive atmospheres.
Industrial Use
Suitable for maintenance in steam networks, heat exchangers, HVAC coils, sterilizers, process lines, boiler rooms, and condensate returns. In cases of external noise from pumps, valves, or adjacent traps, supplementary pressure and temperature profile evaluation is required.
FAQ
Does it detect blocked traps?
Yes, when operating pressure is entered and temperature is compared to the corresponding boiling point.
Is line shutdown required?
No, testing is conducted externally with the trap in operation.
