Hydraulic Pressure Control Valves - 55B-60 Pressure Relief Valve | Cla-Val

Cla-Val 55B-60

Hydraulic pressure relief valve for water distribution networks. Designed for controlled pressure discharge when line pressure exceeds the setpoint. Modulating operation is based on network pressure, with no electrical supply required. Suitable for industrial and municipal water systems.

Operation

When inlet pressure rises above the set value, the valve opens proportionally, diverting flow to a relief line, tank, or return. As pressure drops below the setpoint, the valve closes in a controlled manner. The modulating action minimizes pressure spikes and water hammer.

Typical Applications

  • Pump station overpressure protection
  • Discharge in pressurized pipelines
  • Pump by-pass circuits
  • Potable water and industrial water loops
  • Pressure control at variable flow points

Selection Criteria

Selection should consider:

  • Maximum relief flow rate
  • Set pressure
  • Available backpressure
  • Permissible pressure drop
  • Cavitation risk
  • Body, trim, and elastomer materials

For high ΔP, cavitation and noise must be evaluated. Relief line sizing must prevent excessive backpressure. Material selection should match media and temperature range. Maintenance access and leakage rates should be considered.

Difference from Sustaining Valve

The 55B-60 is primarily for overpressure relief. It is not intended for continuous upstream pressure sustaining unless installed as a dedicated by-pass control. Not a substitute for certified safety valves per EN or ASME standards.

FAQ

Does it replace a safety valve?
No. This is a pressure control valve and does not replace a certified safety valve.

Is electrical actuation required?
No. Operation is fully hydraulic.

Suitable media?
Water and compatible fluids per construction materials.

Description

The Cla-Val Model 55B-60 Pressure Relief Valve is a direct-acting, spring-loaded, diaphragm type relief valve and is typically used in high-rise building water systems to prevent pressure build-up whenever line pressure exceeds the setting of the spring.

Installed downstream of the pressure reducing valves, the 55B-60 relieves excess pressure to the atmosphere to prevent damage to the distribution network.
