Cla-Val 52-01 / 652-01

Hydraulic pressure relief and surge anticipation valve. Designed to protect pumps, discharge pipelines, and associated equipment from transient hydraulic events caused by rapid changes in flow velocity.

Operation

The valve opens in response to a pressure drop that precedes the arrival of a surge wave following abrupt pump shutdown. This controlled discharge relieves pressure before the return wave reaches the pumping station. Additionally, it functions as a pressure relief valve if system pressure exceeds the set point.

Applications

  • Pump station discharge mains
  • Water distribution networks with high flow velocities
  • Deep well installations
  • Industrial water systems
  • Pipeline surge protection

Variants

  • 52-01: Full port design for higher flow capacity.
  • 652-01: Reduced port for lower flow rates or improved control stability.

Construction

  • Connection: Flanged
  • Standard: ANSI
  • Pressure classes: 150 lbs, 300 lbs
  • Materials: Bronze, ASTM A216 WCB, ductile iron

Selection Criteria

Selection requires pump flow data, pipeline length, static pressure, pump stop time, flow velocity, and acceptable surge pressure. Surge analysis is recommended for critical networks.

FAQ

Is this a standard relief valve?
No. It also responds to pre-surge conditions, not just overpressure events.

Is electrical power required?
No. Operation is fully hydraulic via pilot circuit.

Description

Cla-Val Models 52-01 and 652-01 Surge Anticipator Valves are indispensable for protecting pumps, pumping equipment and all applicable pipelines from dangerous pressure surges caused by rapid changes of flow velocity within a pipeline.

When using these valves, pumping systems are started and stopped gradually preventing harmful surges from occurring.
