Indicator & Alarm Unit - Type 40B96 | Gefran

Gefran 40B96 Display & Alarm Unit

The Gefran 40B96 is a 96×48 mm (1/8 DIN) panel-mount process indicator and alarm unit for pressure, force, or position measurement using strain gauges, load cells, pressure transducers, or potentiometers. This device is not a PID controller; it is intended for local process value (PV) indication, trip limit monitoring, and signal retransmission to PLCs or recorders. The front panel is rated IP65, featuring a 5-digit red LED display and four output status LEDs.

Inputs and Ranges

Primary input accepts 350 Ω strain gauges (positive or symmetrical excitation), potentiometers ≥100 Ω, and, in specific models, 0/4–20 mA transmitters. Display scaling is adjustable from -1999 to 9999 or up to 28000 (5-digit), with decimal point selection and 32-segment linearization.

Sampling and Calibration

Accuracy is 0.2% f.s. ±1 digit at 25 °C. Sampling time options are 120, 60, 30, or 15 ms, with sensor excitation monitoring for strain gauge applications. UCAL calibration supports tare (zeroing) and span adjustment using reference loads.

Outputs and Alarm Logic

Up to four alarm points are available, with relay (5 A / 250 V), logic output (24 V / 20 mA), or triac (20–240 Vac / 1 A) options. Alarms can be configured as absolute, deviation, or symmetrical deviation, with hysteresis, latch, manual reset, and programmable delays (DON, DBI, DOF, DPO).

Communication and Installation

Optional isolated RS485 interface supports Gefran CENCAL or Modbus protocols up to 19200 baud. Power supply options: 100–240 Vac/dc or 11–27 Vac/dc. Operating temperature: 0–50 °C; storage: -20–70 °C; humidity: 20–85% non-condensing.

Typical Applications

  • Melt or hydraulic pressure indication
  • Force measurement in presses and test benches
  • Weighing or load monitoring via load cell
  • Position feedback from potentiometer or magnetostrictive transmitter
  • Overpressure/overforce trip in machine panels

Standards and Certifications

UKCA declaration references EN 63000, EN 61326-1, and EN 61010-1. UL certification covers 4B96/40B96 per UL 508 and CSA C22.2 No. 14-M95.

Description

Technical specifications

Overview

96×48 (1/8 DIN) formats manufactured with SMT.

The instruments have a lexan membrane faceplate (guaranteed to IP65) which has 3 keys, a 5 digit display and 4 indicating LED's for the output statuses.

The input signal can be selected from a wide range of sensors:

  • Potentiometer (minimum 100W)
  • Load cell with sensitivity autoranging between 1,5 and 3,3mV/V
  • Strain-gauge pressure sensor

The selection is made using the faceplate keys.

A digital input (24Vdc/5mA) is available for resetting, hold, flash, peak handling or releasing latch.

The instruments have a maximum of 4 outputs that can be mechanical relays or logic outputs.

One output of 0/4 to 20mA (max. 500W) is available for retransmitting the measured input signal.

The retransmission output, the digital input and the third output are options available contemporaneously.

Finally, a triac can be fitted to drive resistive loads up to a maximum of 1A at 240V.

The programming of the instrument is made easy by grouping the parameters in function blocks (CFG for the alarm hysteresis, Inp for the inputs, Out for the outputs…) and by a simplified data entry menu.

The configuration can be simplified even further using the PC programming kit made up of a connection cable and a menu guide program that runs under Windows (data sheet cod. GF_eXpress).

A configurable personal software protection code (password protection) can be used to restrict the levels of editing and displaying the configuration parameters.
