Cla-Val 49-01 / 649-01 – Flow Control & Downstream Pressure Reduction

The Cla-Val 49-01 / 649-01 is a hydraulically operated, pilot-controlled diaphragm valve designed for simultaneous downstream pressure reduction and maximum flow limitation. It is specified where downstream demand must be regulated without overloading the supply network.

Operating Principle

The CRA pilot reduces higher inlet pressure to a stable, lower downstream setpoint. Concurrently, the CDHS18 differential pilot receives a signal from the X52E/X52A orifice plate and modulates the valve to restrict flow as it approaches the preset limit.

Typical Applications

  • Water supply zones requiring both pressure and flow control
  • Network supply lines where over-demand protection is necessary
  • Process water lines
  • Tank filling with controlled flow rates
  • Downstream networks with variable consumption profiles

49-01 vs 649-01

  • 49-01: Full internal port, main valve 100-01.
  • 649-01: Reduced internal port, main valve 100-20. Used where pipe nominal diameter exceeds required hydraulic capacity.

Materials / Connections

  • Body: Ductile iron ASTM A536, ASTM A216-WCB, or bronze UNS 87850
  • Flanges: ANSI B16.42, B16.5, B16.24
  • Pressure classes: 150 and 300 lbs
  • Disc: Buna-N
  • Diaphragm: Reinforced Buna-N
  • Stem, nut, spring: Stainless steel
  • Water temperature: up to 180°F (approx. 82°C)

Selection Considerations

Specify diameter, globe or angle pattern, pressure class, threaded/flanged connection, trim material, CRA pilot set range, and orifice plate bore. Orifice plate should be installed 1–5 pipe diameters downstream, not directly after a butterfly valve.

Description

Cal-Val 49-01 and 649-01 Rate of Flow and Pressure Reducing Valves automatically reduce higher inlet pressure to a steady lower downstream pressure regardless of changing flow rate and/or varying inlet pressure, as long as the flow rate is below a preset maximum. They also prevent excessive flow by limiting flow to a preselected maximum rate using a direct-acting pressure reducing pilot and a rate of flow differential control. The pressure reducing pilot is responsive to slight variations in downstream pressure and immediately controls the main valve to maintain the desired line pressure.

The rate of flow control responds to the differential pressure produced across an orifice plate in the mainline. Accurate control is assured as very small changes in the controlling differential pressure produce immediate corrective action by the main valve.
