MACOGA MAC-FC Gimbal – Full-Face Flange Elastomeric Expansion Joint

The MAC-FC is an elastomeric expansion joint of the gimbal type, designed for piping systems requiring angular movement in any plane without transferring pressure thrust to main anchors. Angular deflection is achieved via two pairs of hinges mounted on a common floating gimbal ring.

Operation

The gimbal ring, hinges, and pins absorb:

  • axial force from internal pressure,
  • shear loads,
  • wind loads,
  • dead weight of the assembly.

Not intended for axial or lateral movement. Primary function is single or multi-plane angular deflection, with torsional restraint of the elastomeric body.

Construction

  • Type: full-faced rubber flange expansion joint.
  • Series: MAC-FC / Gimbal.
  • Design: single or multiple convolution elastomeric section.
  • Flanges: metallic backing flanges, split or fixed.
  • Drilling: EN, ANSI, AWWA, JIS, or project-specific patterns.
  • Dimensions: custom-built, available up to DN6000 for full-face series.

Materials & Media

Elastomer selection is based on media, temperature, and chemical compatibility:

  • EPDM: water, hot water, seawater, oil-free air.
  • EPDM HT: hot water applications up to 140 °C.
  • NBR: oils, fuels, hydrocarbons, gases.
  • SBR / Natural Rubber: sludge, wastewater, liquids with solids.
  • FKM/Viton: chemicals, solvents, oils, hydrocarbons up to 150 °C.

Selection vs. MAC-FP

The MAC-FP hinged allows angular movement in a single plane. The MAC-FC gimbal is selected when angular movement may occur in multiple planes and mechanical absorption of pressure thrust is required.

Applications

Typical uses: power generation, oil & gas, desalination, cooling water, chemical processing, HVAC, shipbuilding, offshore, water and wastewater treatment. No actuator required. Selection based on DN, pressure, temperature, media, angular movement, vacuum service, and piping loads.

Description

These expansion joints can be fabricated as a single and multiple arched elements with flanged connections, plus a system of articular supports that allow for angular movement in one plane only.

The hinged mechanism is designed to accept full pressure thrust.

These expansion joints can be fabricated with more than one convolution.

These units do not allow axial movement. However, some types of hinged systems can be provided with slotted holes for the hinge pins, to allow limited axial displacement. The “slotted hinge” units cannot resist the pressure thrust forces and therefore proper anchorage must be provided.
