Double Hinged expansion joint with welding ends.
Macoga MWY Lateral Expansion Joints
Macoga MWY are metallic double hinged expansion joints with weld ends. The assembly consists of two bellows connected by an intermediate pipe and a hinge system. Designed to absorb lateral and angular movements in a single plane, these joints are not intended for axial displacement.
Operation and Load Handling
The hinge system is engineered to absorb pressure thrust. Unlike unrestrained axial types, MWY joints do not require main anchors for pressure thrust containment, and guiding requirements are reduced. However, guides and supports must be designed for pipe weight, thermal expansion, lateral loads, and operational vibrations.
Typical Applications
- Steam and hot water lines with directional changes
- Industrial piping with lateral movement in one plane
- Process lines where full anchoring for pressure thrust is impractical
- Power plants, refineries, chemical plants, auxiliary circuits
Selection is based on pressure, temperature, bellows material, lateral movement, rotation angle, operating cycles, and media compatibility.
MWY vs MFY
- MWY: Weld end connection.
- MFY: Double hinged design with flanged ends.
Selection depends on piping class, disassembly requirements, installation method, and project welding/inspection procedures.
Installation and Inspection
MWY joints are not intended for misalignment correction. Protect bellows from impacts, scratches, arc strikes, and weld spatter. Do not suspend from hinges or shipping bars. Remove yellow shipping bars before pressure testing. For hydrostatic tests, use chloride-free water.
FAQ
Does it absorb axial movement?
No. It is designed for lateral and angular movement in one plane.
Is an actuator required?
