Expansion Joints - Type MRW | Macoga

Macoga MRW Rectangular Expansion Joints

Macoga MRW are rectangular metallic expansion joints featuring V-shaped convolutions and a camera corner geometry. They are designed for air ducts, exhaust gas ducts, and rectangular piping systems operating under low positive pressure or vacuum. End connections are available as flanged or weld ends, depending on project mechanical requirements.

Design Considerations

Rectangular ducts are not standardized like circular piping; each MRW is custom-engineered. Selection should be based on:

  • internal duct dimensions,
  • operating pressure or vacuum,
  • temperature and thermal expansion,
  • axial movement,
  • potential lateral or angular deflection,
  • duct material and process media.

Movements and Limitations

MRW joints are unrestrained and do not absorb pressure thrust. Proper main anchors, directional anchors, and alignment guides are required. They are primarily used for axial movement absorption. Lateral movement can be accommodated with a dual-bellows arrangement; angular movement is only permitted if specifically designed for.

Typical Applications

  • power generation units,
  • chemical and petrochemical plants,
  • steelworks,
  • exhaust gas ducting,
  • process air ducts,
  • rectangular ducting systems with thermal expansion.

MRW vs MRU / MRV

  • MRU: U-shaped convolutions, rounded corners.
  • MRW: V-shaped convolutions, camera corner, increased flexibility for low pressure and vacuum.
  • MRV: V-shaped convolutions, miter corner, single or double angle.

Installation and Inspection

MRW joints are not intended for correcting misalignment. Protect bellows from impacts, scratches, arc strikes, and weld spatter. Remove yellow transport bars before pressure testing. Use chloride-free water for hydrostatic testing.

FAQ

Are MRW joints suitable for high pressure?
No. MRU/MRW/MRV series are specified for low positive pressure and vacuum applications.

Do they absorb pressure thrust?
No. Calculated anchors and guides are required.

Description

Rectangular expansion joint with V-shaped convolutions and camera corner.

This model is characterized by the shape of its corner camera type and the V-shaped convolution. It is very flexible and used in low pressure and vacuum conditions systems. The connection elements are available either with flanges or welding ends.
