GESTRA TURBISCOPE OR 52 – Oil and Turbidity Detector
The GESTRA OR 52-5 / OR 52-6 is designed for continuous monitoring of transparent liquids, primarily in condensate return lines, feedwater, and hot water circuits. Its function is early detection of insoluble particles, oil, or grease ingress before contaminated condensate returns to the boiler.
Operating Principle
The ORG 12 or ORG 22 sensor operates photometrically. A light beam passes through the liquid; insoluble particles cause scattering. Measurement is based on the 15° forward-scattered light principle, evaluated by the ORT 6 converter, which displays actual values and alarm states.
Technical Data
- System: OR 52-5 with ORG 12 or OR 52-6 with ORG 22
- Operating Pressure: PN10, 10 bar up to 160°C
- Sensor Connections: DN10, G 3/8 A per ISO 228-1
- Bypass Flow: 0.5–50 l/min
- ORT 6 Indication Range: 0–25 ppm
- Adjustable Alarms 1/2: 0–15 ppm
- Output: 4–20 mA, load up to 500 Ω
- Contacts: 3 volt-free contacts for alarm 1, alarm 2, and fault
- Power Supply: 230 VAC, optional 115 VAC
- Protection: IP65
Materials and Type Selection
ORG 12 uses cast iron/galvanized construction; ORG 22 is stainless steel for higher compatibility requirements. Wetted parts must be checked for pH, temperature, and chemical resistance to Duran 50 glass and FFKM gaskets.
Applications
- Condensate monitoring in steam boilers
- Feedwater protection from oil/grease contamination
- Circuits per EN 12952-7 and EN 12953-6
- Raw or treated water
- Gravel filters, softening, reverse osmosis
- Food industry, breweries, beverage plants
Installation
The sensor is installed in a bypass below the main line to prevent gas bubbles and flash steam from affecting measurement. A throttling point (e.g., RK 86 non-return valve with 20 mbar spring) is required in the main line. For 72 h unattended operation, two detectors are required: one for diverting contaminated condensate via a three-way valve, the second for safety circuit monitoring.
