Aviation Pressure Control Coupler type 353GF | Cla-Val

The Cla-Val 353GF is a hydrant pressure control coupler designed for aircraft refueling from underground fuel hydrant systems. It connects to a hydrant pit valve or hydrant pit adapter of 4” API type and integrates a direct-acting pressure regulator with deadman operation, enabling pressure control at the aircraft connection point.

Pressure Control Operation

Applying pressure to the deadman port opens the regulator, allowing fuel flow. Releasing deadman pressure closes the coupler. Opening time is 5–10 s via a fixed, non-adjustable orifice; closing time is adjustable. Stated pressure overshoot is <5%.

Standards and Connection

The assembly is qualified to EI 1584 3rd Edition and is reported to meet EI 1584 4th Edition. Mechanical coupling to the pit valve uses hardened stainless steel balls, allowing coupler rotation after connection to reduce intake hose stress.

Construction

  • Body: high-strength aluminum and stainless steel
  • Two-piece stainless steel piston
  • Low-friction sealing for stable pressure regulation
  • Pilot block with bleed valves for venting fuel sense and hydraulic deadman lines
  • Breakaway feature for mechanical overload protection
  • Folding or solid operating lever, flag stick holder, multiple handle configurations

Configuration Options

353GF code supports the following options:

  • A: air deadman
  • H: hydraulic deadman
  • C: carriage assembly
  • F: flag stick holder
  • L: collar lift
  • 2B / 2N: 2.5” BSPP or NPT outlet thread
  • 3B / 3N: 3” BSPP or NPT outlet thread
  • 4B / 4N: 4” BSPP or NPT outlet thread

Applications

  • Airport hydrant dispensers
  • Jet A-1 underground refueling networks
  • Connection to pit valves per EI 1584
  • Installations requiring local nozzle pressure control and surge pressure limitation

FAQ

When to select air or hydraulic deadman?
Selection depends on dispenser architecture, available control medium, and system ESD procedures.

Purpose of bleed valves on the pilot block?
For venting trapped air from fuel sense and hydraulic deadman lines, minimizing uncontrolled fuel leakage during venting.

Description

The Model 353GF Pressure Control Coupler is a hydrant coupler used in jet aircraft refueling operations. It connects to a hydrant pit valve or hydrant pit adapter to allow pressurized fuel to flow from an underground pipeline and into the receiving aircraft. It incorporates a Deadman operated, direct-acting pressure regulator that protects the receiving aircraft from excess pressure and from damage due to pressure surges.
