Cla-Val 240M-3 Seawater Ballast Control Valve

The Cla-Val 240M-3 is a hydraulically actuated ballast control valve designed for seawater ballast tanks on surface vessels. It is used for controlled filling or emptying of compartments to manage vessel trim and stability. The valve can also function as a remotely operated dump valve for ballast tanks or void spaces.

Operation

This is a piston-operated valve, actuated by hydraulic oil supplied from a remote selector valve, typically located at a control console. The open/close position is determined by the hydraulic control circuit and ballast operation commands, not by direct manual isolation.

Construction Materials

Materials are selected for seawater compatibility: ductile iron for seat ring, cylinder, bracket, and disc retainer; valve bronze for flanges and piston; synthetic rubber for O-rings, packing rings, disc, and wiper ring; SAE 660 bronze for bearings; Monel for selected hardware.

Selection Considerations

Selection should consider valve size, required fill/drain time, available hydraulic pressure, installation location (hull or submerged), remote selector valve type, and maintenance access.

Maintenance

Critical points include O-rings, piston/stem lip seals, synthetic rubber disc condition, corrosion protection, hydraulic oil line cleanliness, and verification of full stroke during periodic functional testing.

Description

Cla-Val 240M Series Ballast Valves control the balance and buoyancy of surface marine vessels. Depending on sea conditions and individual ship requirements, Cla-Val hydraulically operated ballast valves open or close to fill or drain compartments to attain the desired level of buoyancy and to keep the ship in proper balance. They are also used to help facilitate the launching of small watercraft from a larger vessel.

Hull-mounted and submerged, these rugged valves are constructed of top-quality Naval Bronze materials for long life and minimal maintenance.

Whether in the ballast system of an enormous aircraft carrier with thousands of crew members or smaller surface vessels, Cla-Val ballast valves perform with reliability and precision, backed by more than 65 years of experience in the military marine industry.

Cla-Val Model 240M-3 is used in the seawater ballast systems of surface vessels. Constructed of highly durable Naval Bronze, this valve requires little maintenance and will withstand the wear-and-tear that continuous seawater submersion can cause. Available in 4”, 6”, 8” 10” and 14” sizes.
