The Cla-Val RP2M / RP-2M is a reduced pressure zone (RPZ) backflow prevention assembly designed for isolating potable water from seawater or other auxiliary shipboard piping systems. Unlike a standard check valve, it incorporates two independent spring-loaded check valves and an intermediate differential relief valve to maintain process integrity and prevent cross-contamination.
During normal flow, both check valves remain open and the differential relief valve is closed. When flow stops, the check valves close, maintaining the intermediate zone at least 2 psi below inlet pressure. If inlet pressure drops or backflow conditions occur, the relief valve opens to drain, preventing contaminated or seawater from reaching the potable water side.
Install RP2M horizontally with the relief valve discharging vertically to drain. Ensure adequate air gap and access for testing, cleaning, and internal part replacement.
Routine inspection should include both check valves, the relief valve, differential pressure in the RPZ, drain cleanliness, and Buna-N seal condition. For seawater service, check for salt deposits, fouling, and internal port blockages.
