Solenoid Valves

Marine solenoid valves are used as remote or automatic control elements in auxiliary shipboard circuits, where a command from a control panel, relay, PLC, or fire-protection system must be converted into hydraulic or pneumatic control energy. Selection should not be based only on connection size. The normal operating position, coil voltage, service medium, line pressure, duty cycle, enclosure protection, and compliance with naval system specifications must also be verified.

This category includes the Cla-Val 136M-2 and CSM5M-3A. The 136M-2 is a solenoid control valve typically applied in air-conditioning and chilled fresh water systems. For union-end versions, MIL-F1183 is referenced. For flanged versions, the applicable standards include MIL-F20042 Class 150 and ASA Class 150 in accordance with B16.24.

The CSM5M-3A is a dual-solenoid control arrangement used in magazine sprinkling systems, hangar deck and water-curtain sprinkling systems, and elevator shaft foam flooding piping. The assembly is specified as a 3/8 in valve manufactured to MIL-F1183 and functions as a control component in seawater spray or AFFF fire-suppression systems, where the actuation sequence must be clearly defined and verified.

During system design, the fail-safe logic, manual override where required, seat tightness, fluid cleanliness, salt exposure, and the ability to test the valve without unintended discharge of the protected circuit should be reviewed. In marine fire-protection service, the solenoid valve should be evaluated together with pilot lines, restriction orifices, strainers, check valves, and position indication devices, since small blockages or electrical faults can alter the response time of the complete control assembly.
