KITO Armaturen GmbH is a German manufacturer of explosion protection equipment for tanks, pipelines and vapour systems handling flammable liquids or gases. End-of-line valves are installed on tank vents and atmospheric outlets. They allow tank breathing during filling, emptying and thermal expansion while preventing flame transmission when equipped with a flame arrester element.

Pressure relief valves protect tanks from overpressure caused by filling, thermal expansion, inert gas systems or process disturbances. Vacuum relief valves protect tanks from collapse during emptying, cooling or vapour condensation.

In-line deflagration and detonation flame arresters are used in piping where a flame front may propagate through an explosive gas or vapour mixture. Selection depends on gas group, MESG, operating pressure, temperature, pipe geometry, L/D ratio and whether the scenario is deflagration or detonation.

Critical design data include:

  • medium and explosion group,
  • MESG and temperature class,
  • maximum operating pressure and temperature,
  • tank breathing capacity,
  • set pressure and set vacuum,
  • end-of-line or in-line installation,
  • deflagration, detonation, short-time burning or endurance burning requirement,
  • ATEX / ISO 16852 certification,
  • material of body and flame arrester element,
  • inspection and maintenance access.

For tank farm engineers, safety engineers and process engineers, KITO equipment must be integrated into the tank protection and explosion safety concept.
