Cla-Val 33VB Vacuum Breaker Valve

The Cla-Val 33VB is a vacuum breaker valve designed for water distribution and transmission pipelines. It is installed at high points in piping systems to admit air during vacuum conditions, preventing pipe deformation, collapse, or unstable hydraulic operation.

Operation

The large air inlet orifice allows unrestricted air entry during pipeline draining. The valve opens at low negative pressure (approx. 1/4 psi) and reseals tightly with an elastomer seat once pressure is restored.

Technical Specifications

  • Type: Vacuum breaker valve
  • Body: Ductile iron ASTM A536
  • Coating: Epoxy coated body
  • Connection: NPT or flanged
  • Standard: ANSI
  • Pressure classes: 150 lbs / 300 lbs
  • Maximum operating pressure: 400 psi
  • Maintenance: Top-entry, serviceable without pipeline removal

Applications

  • High points in potable water networks
  • Water transmission pipelines
  • Pump station discharge (force mains)
  • Lines subject to vacuum during draining
  • Protection of large diameter pipelines from vacuum collapse

Difference from Combination Air Valves

The 33VB is intended primarily for air intake under vacuum conditions. It does not replace combination air valves where continuous air release under pressure or large air expulsion during filling is required.

FAQ

Where is it installed?
At high points or locations where draining may induce vacuum conditions.

What does it protect?
The pipeline from vacuum conditions and potential mechanical collapse.

What factors are considered in selection?
DN (nominal diameter), ANSI class, opening vacuum setpoint, air intake capacity, and pipeline hydraulic profile.

Description

Designed to protect pipelines from vacuum collapse in waterworks distribution systems, the Cla-Val Model 33VB Vacuum Breaker Valve prevents vacuum conditions from forming at high points in the pipeline. The valve’s large intake orifice freely admits air during pipeline draining.

The valve’s many benefits include the following:

  • Fully unrestricted vacuum protection
  • 400 psi maximum operating pressure
  • Resilient seat included for drip-tight closure
  • Large valve orifice allows for air intake at 1/4 psi vacuum
  • Standard epoxy coated ductile iron body
  • Easily serviced without removal from pipeline
