OFI 04 / OFI 07 Fiber Optic Indicators DonadonSDD

The OFI 04 and OFI 07 fiber optic indicators are designed for electronic confirmation of rupture disc opening, without electrical or moving parts in contact with process equipment. Fiber optic terminations are mounted in the holder and connected to an amplifier. When the disc opens, light transmission between fibers is interrupted, triggering a signal to the plant safety or control system.

Technical Specifications

  • OFI 04: plastic optical fiber, operating temperature -55°C to +70°C / +105°C, minimum bending radius R25.
  • OFI 07: glass optical fiber with stainless steel protection, operating temperature -40°C to +250°C, minimum bending radius R23.
  • Amplifier: supply voltage 12–24 VDC, consumption 45 mA max, operating temperature -10°C to +60°C, response time 1 ms, protection IP64, housing ABS.

Compatibility and Applications

Indicators are compatible with DCD, DIF, LPD, SCD, SCR, Y90, and KRD rupture discs. They are primarily selected for low or very low pressure applications where conventional electrical, magnetic, or inductive indicators may not activate reliably due to minimal material displacement during disc opening.

ATEX and Installation

OFI indicators do not constitute an ignition source at the process interface, as only optical fibers are present. If the amplifier is installed in ATEX zones 1, 21, 2, or 22, it must be housed in a certified Ex d enclosure. Installation zone depends on the barrier: Ex ia for zones 0, 20, 1, 21, 2, 22 and Ex ib for zones 1, 21, 2, 22.

Maintenance

After disc opening, indicator replacement is not mandatory. Cleaning of protective guides and optical surfaces, and signal verification, are recommended before line reactivation.

Description

OFI

Optical rupture indicators Donadon OFI 04 and OFI 07 are very simple and reliable instruments for detecting bursting of discs.

The terminals of the optical fibres are installed in the disc holder in a suitable position and are connected to an amplifier.

Light transmission between the two optical fibres is interrupted by the bursting of the disc and a signal is sent to the plant’s safety system.

If the amplifier is in an ATEX classified zone 1, 21, 2, 22, it must be installed inside an Ex d certified box.

There are no electrical or moving parts in contact with the equipment to be controlled and therefore OFI indicators are not an ignition source.

OFI 04 and OFI 07 indicators are not damaged by the opening of the disc and therefore do not need to be replaced. Cleaning protection slides is recommended.

OFI 04 and OFI 07 indicate the opening of the disc for any maintenance or replacement.

Zone installation depends on barrier type:

Ex ia barrier -> zone 0; 20; 1; 21; 2; 22

Ex ib barrier -> zone 1; 21; 2; 22

DonadonSDD is subject to inspections carried out by 3-A Sanitary Standard, Inc. (3-A SSI) so that our rupture discs can meet the highest sanitary standards.

Upon request, our clients can ask independent inspectors to certify single batches.
