Macoga MWCD Expansion Joints

Macoga MWCD expansion joints are metallic double gimbal type compensators, featuring two bellows, an intermediate pipe, and a dual cardan/gimbal system. They are available with weld ends or flanges and are designed to absorb lateral and angular displacements in any direction.

Operation and Loads

The MWCD transfers pressure thrust through its articulated system. This eliminates the need for main anchors to absorb pressure thrust, unlike unrestrained axial types. However, support, guiding, pipe weight, operational vibration, and lateral loads must still be considered during system design.

Permissible Movements

  • Axial movement: not a primary function.
  • Lateral movement: in one or multiple planes.
  • Angular movement: in any direction.
  • Torsion: should not be imposed on the bellows.

Lateral capacity depends on the geometry of the bellows, intermediate pipe length, rotation angle, and operational cycles.

Typical Applications

Used in steam lines, hot water, thermal oil, exhaust gases, process gases, and industrial piping systems with multi-plane movements. Suitable where piping layout does not allow a single-plane hinged solution.

MWCD vs MWY / MWK

  • MWY: double hinged, lateral and angular movement in one plane.
  • MWK: double articulated, lateral movement in any direction, angular in one plane.
  • MWCD: double gimbal, lateral and angular movement in any direction.

Installation and Inspection

Not intended for misalignment correction. Bellows must be protected from impacts, scratches, arc strikes, and weld spatter. Do not suspend from gimbals or transport bars. Remove yellow transport bars before pressure testing; use chloride-free water for hydrostatic tests.

Certifications

Compliant with PED 2014/68/EU Module H, ISO 9001:2015, DIN ISO 3834-2, ASME Certification Mark, TÜV AD 2000-Merkblatt HP0, Lloyd’s Register, and DNV-GL Type Approval.
