Specialty Products

Specialized marine products cover control equipment for dedicated shipboard circuits where valve operation is tied to a defined system sequence rather than simple line isolation. In these applications, selection should be based on circuit function, service medium, operating pressure, temperature, installation position, remote sensing requirements, and compliance with the naval specifications applicable to the project.

This category includes the Cla-Val 50M-1 Remote Sensing Lube Oil Unloading Valve. The valve is used in turbine bearing lubrication systems for surface-vessel and submarine propulsion service, where controlled unloading of lubricating oil is required with remote sensing of pressure or circuit operating status. It is available in sizes 2-1/2 in. to 8 in., in straight or angle pattern, with flanged ends to ASME B16.5.

Remote sensing is critical when the pressure control point is not located at the valve body. In turbine lube oil circuits, response lag, line pressure drop, oil temperature, viscosity, and fluid cleanliness all affect control stability and bearing protection. For this reason, the valve should be evaluated as part of the lubrication system logic and hydraulic response, not as a standalone piping component.

During selection and maintenance, the engineer should verify flange pressure class, straight versus angle configuration, elastomer compatibility with lube oil, condition of pilot and sensing lines, filter cleanliness, seat tightness, and actual operating pressure under load. Contamination, oil foaming, viscosity shift, or incorrect pressure pickup can alter response time and unloading behavior of the circuit.
