CLA-VAL – Technical profile of an automatic control valve manufacturer

CLA-VAL is a manufacturer of automatic control valves for waterworks, fire protection, aviation fueling, marine and industrial applications. The official CLA-VAL product scope includes pressure reducing valves, relief valves, deluge valves, air valves and other automatic control valve solutions.

Most CLA-VAL automatic control valves are based on a main valve and a pilot control system. The pilot circuit senses pressure or flow conditions and modulates the main valve hydraulically.

Typical technical functions include:

  • pressure reducing,
  • pressure sustaining,
  • pressure relief,
  • level control,
  • flow control,
  • pump control,
  • surge anticipation,
  • deluge and fire protection control,
  • air release and vacuum relief.

Pressure reducing valves are used to maintain stable downstream pressure in water distribution systems. Pressure sustaining valves maintain upstream pressure. Relief and surge valves protect pipelines from transient overpressure.

In fire protection systems, CLA-VAL products may include UL / ULC listed and FM approved fire protection valves, depending on the model and application.

Selection requires:

  • inlet and outlet pressure,
  • flow range,
  • minimum and maximum demand,
  • valve size and cavitation risk,
  • pilot system configuration,
  • water quality,
  • surge conditions,
  • installation orientation,
  • bypass and isolation arrangement,
  • commissioning procedure.

For waterworks engineers, fire protection engineers and utility operators, CLA-VAL valves should be evaluated as hydraulic control assemblies, not as simple isolation valves.
