Fire protection accessories are used for the functional completion of control valves, fire pumps, sprinkler networks, deluge systems, and fire pump discharge piping. They are not primary isolation valves, but auxiliary components that affect flow testing, drainage, pilot circuit protection, and local operating indication.

Selection should consider installation position, discharge direction, available drainage capacity, operating pressure, access for testing, freeze protection, and compliance with NFPA, FM, UL, and project-specific specifications. Maintenance should include inspection for throttling restrictions, strainer fouling, drain point condition, visual or audible indication function, and blockage caused by scale, deposits, or suspended solids. Media compatibility is generally limited to clean or treated water service within the pressure and temperature limits defined by the manufacturer and the applicable fire protection standard.
